Flash Flood Watch Into Friday Morning

July 30, 2009 Eddie Leave a comment

329 AM CDT THU JUL 30 2009

…A FLASH FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES FOR WEST TENNESSEE…

.AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL APPROACH THE MIDSOUTH TODAY WHILE A COLD FRONT STARTS TO MOVE SOUTH INTO THE AREA BY LATE THIS AFTERNOON. WIDESPREAD SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP OVER THE REGION THIS MORNING AHEAD OF THE UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE AND CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE DAY INTO THE EVENING HOURS.

RAIN WILL OCCASIONALLY BE HEAVY AT TIMES. THE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BEGIN TO TAPER OFF FROM THE WEST THURSDAY NIGHT AS THE COLD FRONT PUSHES THROUGH THE AREA. IN WEST TENNESSEE THE WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES:

CARROLL…CHESTER…CROCKETT…DECATUR…FAYETTE…GIBSON…HARDEMAN…HARDIN…HAYWOOD…HENDERSON…HENRY…MADISON…MCNAIRY AND WEAKLEY.

* THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING

* WIDESPREAD SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL OCCUR TODAY. SOME SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL PRODUCE HEAVY RAIN ACROSS THE MIDSOUTH. TWO TO FOUR INCHES OF RAIN WILL BE POSSIBLE THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING…WITH LOCALLY HEAVIER AMOUNTS.

* THE GROUND IS ALREADY SATURATED IN MANY AREAS DUE TO WELL ABOVE NORMAL RAIN IN JULY. THIS WILL INCREASE THE RUNOFF POTENTIAL… AND WILL MAKE FLASH FLOODING MORE LIKELY.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.

July Remains on Track for the Record Books

July 24, 2009 Eddie Leave a comment

July of 2009 is proving once again that International Falls is rightly nick-named the “Nation’s Icebox”. As of July 22nd, International Falls, MN has had an average temperature this month of 57.6 degrees F. This is 8.2 degrees F below normal and a sturdy place to go into the record books as the coldest July ever observed at International Falls. July of 1992 currently hold this record where the monthly average temperature was 59.4 degrees F. There have been zero cooling degrees day this July. The average number of cooling degrees days for July is 91. The average monthly temperature at the Duluth Airport as of July 22nd was 61.3 degrees F; 3.9 degrees below normal. This July is in a favorable running to make the top ten coldest July’s on record since observations began in 1871. In comparison, the Minneapolis/St Paul Airport was 3.5 degrees below normal for July as of the 22nd. Since June 1st, there have been five new daily record low temperatures set this summer at International Falls. One quite impressive record this month is the new record coldest daytime maximum temperature of 53 degrees F that was set on July 16th. This was a full 10 degrees F below the previous record set in 1956. July 16th 2009 also now holds the record for the coldest daily average temperature of 51 degree F for this date. So far this July each daily average has been at or below the 30 year normal. The International Falls Airport did reach 80 degrees F once this month, on the 10th, but has also seen four nights in the 30s, two of which fell to 35 degrees F. (NWS)
