Daily Record Settting Snowfall in Jackson

(Saturday, February 28, 2009) – The daily greatest snowfall on record in Jackson at McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport is 8.0 inches set on 2/11/1985.  As of 10 pm, here in N. Jackson at least I’ve recorded 7.9 inches of the white stuff.  On a personal note, I have been observing weather from West KY, West TN and N. MS since 1968 and this is rivaling the most snow I’ve personally ever measured.  In the late 80s I measured 9.0 inches of snow in Mt. Pleasant (Marshall County), MS.  I measured an hourly snowfall of 2.8 inches.  That is a first!

Some other reports from the NWS:

Atoka, Tipton Co.-      8.5 inches

N. Jackson, Madison Co.-   7.9 inches

Bemis, Madison Co. – 8.5 inches

Henderson,  Chester Co. – 4.0 inches

Gilt Edge, Tipton Co. – 9.3 inches

Union City, Obion Co. – 5.0 inches

It appears from the latest radar imagry the heavy snow band that produced the nearly 3 inches of snow in an hour is now drifting south of I-40 and will be impacting areas toward Memphis during the rest of the evening.
