Freezing Line Bisects West TN

December 16, 2008 Eddie Leave a comment

(Tuesday, December 16, 2008) – At 4 PM, using ASOS, AWOS and MESONET reports, the freezing line is analyzed from Clarksville to Humboldt to just south of Covington.  (See graphic below for rough placement of 32º isotherm).  The frontal boundary is still quite distinctive across north-central Alabama to a weak low over western AL then south to near New Orleans.  Using the NAM temperature forecast as it has handled this cold air the best and this afternoon has done fairly decent job with the temperatures, both the 12z and 18z runs generally keep the freezing line right where it is currently.  This is almost parallel to highway 70/79.  So lows should range from around 27 at Union City/Dyersburg to 29 at Paris to 34 at Jackson and 36 at Savannah.

Guidance is only suggesting a 20-30 percent chance of any precipitation and anything should be light and be more on the order of drizzle…keeping in mind it will be freezing drizzle north of the freezing line.

Forecast for Jackson & Madison County

December 16, 2008 Eddie Leave a comment

(Tuesday, December 16, 2008) – I am posting a forecast for the Jackson-Madison County area. After considering radar trends I feel the NAM model is doing a little better than GFS. It certainly is superior on temperatures. I am following 6 hourly MOS POPs after considering the radar trends and the 3-hourly MOS and raw NAM model generated numbers.
