October 30, 2008 Eddie Leave a comment
(Thursday, October 30, 2008) – Temperatures dipped below freezing again this morning over roughly the eastern half of West TN. At 5 AM, it was 29º at Savannah and Lexington and 31º at Bolivar. Huntingdon was right on the mark at 32º.

Today through Saturday

Surface high pressure over the region will be shifting east and we will see a continued warm-up. Highs will be in the 60s to near 70 today and everybody will begin to have a shot at 70-degree weather as we go into the weekend. It will remain dry.

Saturday Night Through Next Wednesday

In fact, dry weather with temperatures that will be pleasant during the day and cool at night will prevail through the middle of next week. Little change will be noted in temperatures through the middle of next week. A cold front begins slight rain chances by next Thursday. In the meantime: ENJOY!

Frosty Start to a Nice Day

October 29, 2008 Eddie Leave a comment

(Wednesday, October 29, 2008) – Clear frosty conditions prevailed this morning around West TN.  Here is an early tabulation of morning lows:

Savannah:   25

Lexington and Bolivar:   26

Huntingdon, Union City and Paris:   27

Jackson Airport:   28

Dyersburg:   30

These readings followed some chilly high temperatures on Tuesday.  Bolivar, Union City, Huntingdon, Bemis and Paris all had highs in the 40s.  Bemis’ high of 49 set a new record low maximum for the date.

Today Through Friday

High pressure over the Lower Mississippi Valley will shift east through Friday.  This will translate into a warm-up.  Highs return to the 60s today in lost locales and we should begin to see some highs around 70 as the week closes out.

Saturday Through Election Day

Not looking for any rain through this period.  Daytime highs will be around 70-73 degrees and morning lows will be in the 40s.  I don’t do any camping, but if I did, this weather outlook sounds ideal.

Good news for Election Day – Tuesday.  It’ll be dry and pleasant with highs around 72 degrees.

Freeze Warnings Through 9 AM Today and Again Late Tonight

October 28, 2008 Eddie Leave a comment

(Tuesday, October 28, 2008) – After some cloudiness through most of the night, keeping temperatures above freezing a little longer than expected, at 5 AM satellite images and surface reports are showing mainly clear skies and temperatures ranging from 30º at Covington and Savannah to 35º at Jackson.

Today through Wednesday Night

The NWS continues a Freeze Warning for West TN through 9 AM this morning and then again late tonight and early Wednesday. High pressure with a Canadian connection will keep our weather cold through mid-week. Typically at the end of October we see highs around 68 and lows around 45. Highs will come off near-freezing temperatures and warm to levels near where they were Monday. High pressure will move through the region tonight and Wednesday and with little wind and mainly clear skies temperatures will dip into the upper 20s again tonight in most areas. Winds become westerly Wednesday and temps will reach for 60º. Wednesday night will be mainly clear with temps staying above freezing but bottoming out in the 30s.

Thursday through Next Monday

This period will be characterized by a warming trend and we’ll see temps returning to around normal or maybe a “smidge” above. A weak cold front will attempt a move through the area on Saturday, but wash out in the process. Early next week a storm system will be cranking up in the High Plains and southerly winds will be strengthening. This will lead to a continued warming into the 70s.

Election Day Outlook

The storm will be going strong on election day – next Tuesday. High pressure is expected along the east coast. This translates into a near perfect day to go out to vote.

Jackson-West Tennessee Weather Summary

Freeze Watches Posted for Coldest Air of the Season

(Monday, October 27, 2008) – The coldest air of the fall is pouring into West Tennessee. One of the most incredible evidences of the arrival of this new air mass is the dryness of the air. Check out the graph of the dew point temperature.

Dew Point Trace from N. Jackson

Dew Point Trace from N. Jackson

The sharp drop into the teens speaks for itself. At 5 AM, skies were clear and temperatures had fallen into the mid-30s in Paris (37º) and it was 39º at Huntingdon. Jackson and Savannah were on the upper end of the scale at 42º.

Today through Wednesday

The cold air will be the big story. Freeze watches are posted for late tonight and again late Tuesday night. My thinking, given the very low dew points that this will become a no-brainer for a Freeze Warning to be issued by the NWS. Tuesday night will be the coldest night. I think we’ll see temps bottom out in the 20s in most areas outside of Memphis. That will clinch it for the growing season. By the way, this falls right in line with our average first 32º reading on the calendar. Daytime highs will be on the low end of the 50s today and Tuesday and in the upper 50s on Wednesday. Dry weather will prevail.

Thursday through the Weekend

Thursday will be a nice warm-up day ahead of a week disturbance will push another cold front through the area. Highs on Thursday will reach for 70º. This next front will have little or now moisture to work with so I expect only a few clouds with it. Highs Friday will be in the mid-60s. Meanwhile lows Thursday morning will be in the upper 30s and Friday morning in the mid-40s. Temperatures are a challenge for the upcoming weekend. I’m leaning toward a computer model that suggests we’ll could have possible highs in the upper 50s to around 60º. Morning lows will be in the 30s.
